Mom's Advice

I have a box in storage labeled "Mom Box". It's full of letters and cards that my mom and I exchanged over the years. Writing was just always an easier way to communicate. This box means more to me than anything because as I go through it occasionally, my mom reveals messages to me when I need them most. Sometimes I think she always knew she wouldn't be around forever to tell me the things I needed to hear. These messages probably didn't mean much to me when she wrote them so many years ago, but as I *ahem* age, I cherish them and understand them. In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, I wanted to share with you a letter she wrote me when I left home for college. I read it often. The advice in it could not speak to my heart more than anything else. While it was great college advice, using it in my life now is much more powerful. I am fortunate to have this reminder, handwritten, from a woman I miss and love dearly.

Dear Tracy, The time has come and you're leaving home for the first time. I'd like to stay by your side and protect you forever, but I know I need to let go and watch you spread your wings.
You've kept my spirit alive, my mind challenged, and my body active.
Be strong. Never lose your pride and continue to trust in God. You will have times, as I did, when you wonder if you can survive the pain. You will. Never forget that. There is nothing that will come your way that you will not be able to handle. Count your blessings when you feel low and do something constructive for someone else.
Never give up trying things, no matter what others tell you. Believe in yourself and never give less than your best. Trust that inner voice that you will come to know. Remember who you are and what you stand for.
Love yourself. Find peace with who you are and don't look outside yourself for acceptance and love. Find it deep within you and treasure it always.
I know I can't always protect you from harm's way, but know that you have the greatest thing on earth that money cannot buy -- the love of your family.
God Bless You, Tracy, and may HE hold you in the palm of His hand.
Love to my little Tracy girl, Your Mummy
