I never in a million years thought I'd be a "shake person". When I started dating my hubby (all those years ago...), he was really into these breakfast drinks that you got at the grocery store. Even that was weird to me at first, but every now and then I would have one. It was basically fancy chocolate milk and mostly just sugar. I never felt full. I never felt like it really did anything. Fast forward about five years in our lives and I started my Shaklee business. Even when I started, I was still not into this shake stuff and the canister that came with my kit sat in our pantry for months. I was ADAMANT that if I did this Shaklee business more seriously, that I was not going to be promoting weight loss or this shake stuff!! I fought it and fought it and FOUGHT IT.
But after my son was born and I went back to work, life of course got crazier! I was rushing out the door every morning with about 17 million bags to make sure we all had everything. His diaper bag, my pump bag, my lunch bag, his milk bag... I am sure the list went all the way to 17 million. Eventually, I found myself skipping breakfast which was not good. I am one of those people who gets HANGRY. You know the feeling right? That mixture of hunger and anger that makes you insane? There is a major chemical imbalance in me if I get too hungry so to be breastfeeding (which sucks the calories and nutrients out of you) and not eating, I was a walking recipe for snappiness.
So like many other aspects of Shaklee, I dusted off the canister of shake mix that came with my kit and started using that in the mornings. Pretty soon, I noticed I stayed fuller almost all the way to lunch, I had energy in the morning, and baby weight was starting to leave quicker because I was actually fueling my body. Before I knew it, I had morphed into a "shake" person.
Fast forward a year, I am faithfully using Shaklee shakes every morning with my Vitalizer nutrient strip, but I refused to talk to people about weight loss and our Shaklee 180 program!! Seriously, I had such an attitude problem. I am lucky people still love me. However, by this time in our lives I was post baby, post miscarriage, and NOT in love with my body. I often tell people that it doesn't matter if you are a size 6 or a size 16, if you don't feel good in your skin or your clothes, it's NOT a good place to be! Numbers don't matter. Feelings do! So AGAIN I embraced Shaklee for what it was and decided to do try our Shaklee 180 weight management program. What I didn't know was that I was already having a shake a day with my vitamins and that WAS part of the program! All I needed to do was to get active, increase my water intake, and clean up my eating. Within 90 days, I had lost 13 pounds and have been able to keep it off since 2013. Well, minus that whole having another baby in there but I am again almost right back to where I want to
But these days there are so many protein shake options, how do you really know what to choose? I certainly would have had no idea what to pick when I started all of this and thankfully I feel a safe and pure option landed in my lap. If I were starting from scratch there are some things I'd consider before consuming a protein drink.
1. Is the word artificial anywhere on the label? This is something I try to avoid in all foods we buy. We aren't 100% perfect at it but if it is a product we are going to consume daily, it can't have the word artificial on it. There are many artificial sweeteners that go by names we don't realize too such as aspartame, acesulfame potassium (ace-K), and sucralose.
2. Does the company you are purchasing from test the product for safety? Again, this isn't something I would have thought about when I started all of this but knowing what I know about this industry, there is a HUGE difference in quality control. It's one thing to say your product is safe, but it's another thing to be able to prove it. With Shaklee, astronauts and world class athletes take our products and if you know anything about these two types of people they have to be extremely careful of what they ingest! Supplements and shakes are not a regulated market so unless the company takes it upon themselves to guarantee a safe product, do the testing, and back their products no one is out there making them.
3. How long has the company been in business? Unfortunately, there are companies these days that come and go because they are trying to catch the latest "fad" and make a buck. Shaklee prides itself on over 100 years of innovation and over 60 years of continuous operation as a leading global natural nutrition company. Read more about our 100 years of The Shaklee Effect.
