Sometimes We Need a Little Push

Joining Shaklee was a year or more in the making.  My friend Tracy joined and gave a pretty good pitch on their cleaning products – I was an easy sell on that.  My husband and I weren’t pregnant at the time, but we were planning to have children and I knew I wanted to make a change in our home.  I purchased a Get Clean starter kit and liked the products.  I especially liked that I could de-clutter under my sink!  After that, I was pretty quiet on the Shaklee scene.  I liked the cleaning products, but didn’t really look into anything else.

After our daughter was born in February 2013, I started to think about my own health in a different light.  It was crazy to think of all the things I would need to teach my own child and I realized I didn’t have all the tools to teach her how to live a healthy lifestyle. Plus, I wasn’t the best example.  Sure, I was walking/running and being active, but my diet was TERRIBLE.  Still is at times.  I’m a work in progress.

By summer 2013, I was taking care of a 5 month old and gearing up to go back into the classroom at a new school.  I was excited, nervous, anxious, tired…exhausted.  Late night feedings and busy nap times planning for a new classroom were beginning to take their toll, but I love change and was so excited about where my life was heading.  Tracy posted about a challenge program around that same time.  She wanted to get a group going for 90 days and I decided I might as well join.  Her challenge program was geared around the Shaklee 180 Lean and Healthy program and included a Facebook support group, which proved to be a huge perk.  It was just the push I needed to start thinking differently about my health.

After my initial experience with the Shaklee 180 program (which was amazing), I continued on the vitamins, but stopped the shakes for a brief period.  I was in a routine of working out and running plus I was eating a little better.  In November, I started a different work-out program that included shakes so I just naturally started those to see what benefits I would find.  I loved the work-outs, but the shakes did not agree with my system. I found myself sick for a good period of time between November and December before finally realizing it was a side effect from the other shakes I was using. I stopped them all together and those symptoms have never returned.

After taking a break from everything for a brief period of time to get my system back on track, my husband and I found out we were expecting again in February 2014.  I began to think really hard about my health again.  This would be our third pregnancy and with a history of pre-term deliveries, I wanted to know what I could do to prevent an early delivery with this child.  I wanted to be sure I was taking the best pre-natal, involving chiropractic care in my pregnancy plan, eating better and staying active.  Thinking I could control it.  It would turn out that I have a condition known as a bicornuate uterus and so carrying a baby to term is not as easy, but I still wanted to try.

I did do all of the things I mentioned above and also began reflecting on a few things going on in my life.  I spent the whole summer loving up and learning from my beautiful, smart and very active daughter.  She’s affectionately known as a “firecracker”.  Between zoo trips, playdates, weekends at the lake, and many miles put on her Radio Flyer as we walked around town, it was by far the busiest and best summer I have had in years.  And exhausting.  I was struggling to keep up with all of my “extras” on top of taking care of her.

If you’ve ever been pregnant, you know that creating a human being and chasing after a small one at the same time is a little exhausting.  I was running out of energy early in the afternoon and looked forward to nap time for the naps!!  No more productive, work nap times.  They were all about mommy and baby sleeping for what I hoped would be a full two-hours.

In August 2014, I was ready for a change.  I was tired all the time and needed something to help with my energy while pregnant.  I checked with my OB and went back on the Women’s Vitalizer vitamins from Shaklee.  I felt immediate results as my energy picked back up.  I also took a leap of faith.  I had been visiting with Tracy about the business side of Shaklee during a few of get-togethers over the summer.  I have been a part of the direct-sales field for the past three years and so I knew the basics, but this would be a whole new adventure for me.  Nutrition and health, not bags and purses.  I was ready to provide people with things they needed and improved their lives, not things that filled their closets.

Joining Shaklee was a decision that took me over a year to make, but I am so glad that I made it.  I use and love their products.  Our home is healthier and working towards being better every day.  I make conscious decisions about our meals each day, our grocery list each week, our vitamin intake and our activity.  We are taking the steps to change our habits so we can change our health.

My Why.

Having a reason behind a new business adventure or a change in your life is always a good idea.  Knowing why you are doing something helps ensure you will actually do it.

My Why:  My Family.  My Health.  My Knowledge.

My Family.
I want my family to live healthier and make healthy food choices.  It is my responsibility to teach my children how to make those healthy food and activity choices.  I also want to be able to earn an extra income that supports a healthy lifestyle for my family.

My Health.
I think it is important to lead by example.  If I want my children and my husband (and my extended family) to eat well and live a healthier life, I need to do those things!  I want to be able to remain active and healthy as my children get older so that I can participate in their activities and not worry about being sick, getting sore, or getting old.

My Knowledge.
I am a teacher.  I am a lifelong learner.  I want to know more about healthy lifestyle choices – vitamins, minerals, supplements in general, diets, food choices, physical activity, everything – so that I can teach others.  Knowledge is power and I want to gain more knowledge to better myself.

So that’s my story and my reasons for joining Shaklee.  I am excited about this journey.  I’m excited about my partnership with the lovely people at Happy Medium Health.  I look forward to helping many more people change their habits and change their health.
